If a system re-load is required, we also offer backup and recovery of data included in the bench fee.
It is recommended that customers bring in any software that came with the computer, including recovery cd’s, or operating system disks. Also bring any additional software the customer wants us the re-install.

How often should maintenance be performed on a computer?
My simple answer to this question is, the more important the computer's job, the more often it should be looked at. Typically, I suggest at least once every three months for a regular business computer. And at least every six months for a home PC.

Of course banking on the web should be considered, as this type of transactions could make the computer more vulnerable to abuse. When a work computer is used for things other than work, such as Face Book, Myspace, or other web based games or social networking, then, this work computer is very likely to be compromised. This could cause the maintenance requirements to escalate, to every month.

The amount of cyber attacks have grown to a horrible quantity, we see computers daily now that have multiple attacks active on the PC, and some times these re-occur, due to a lack of monitoring of the kids activities. When kids (especially boys) get into their early and mid teens, curiosity over takes common sense, and they are lured into the world of porn. Sleep overs, account for a lot of these activities also. So it is often not your children doing the damage, but the kids next door, coming to spend the night.

When a computer is acting "funny", or not doing as it normally should, it needs to be checked out as soon as possible, because active attacks can get so bad, that it is cheaper to just wipe the drive and start over, than it is to try and fix the problem.

We can usually back the data (pictures, music, documents) up, but of course this takes time, and adjusts the cost of the repair, but at least you would not loose every thing.

Even though it seems to cost a lot of money to have maintenance done, especially in our "disposable" atmosphere, it is better than the alternative of loosing every thing.

The attack stops the user from browsing the Internet, removing the virus or just using the computer. We recommend using another browser other than IE,

In consideration of the sum listed below, it is understood by both the business owner and 2WiseGuys PC Repair that business owner is entitled and will receive the following provisions of this Commercial PC Service Agreement.

1) 4 Scheduled calls per year, with interior cleaning of PC with each call.
2) Prompt emergency service during normal working hours.
3) Prompt after-hours calls, no overtime charge.

After running a couple tips about the BCC feature in e-mail, I've gotten a few e-mails from people about being able to see the BCC e-mail addresses after the e-mail has already been sent. Several of you have asked, "Is that possible"? Well, it depends on a couple things.
If you're trying to see the BCC addresses from an e-mail you received from someone else, it's not possible. The BCC feature is used to keep e-mail addresses disclosed from other recipients. The main reason it's even used is so others can't see everyone else's address, including your own. It's just a generous thing to do when you're sending e-mail, because it prevents all of those e-mail addresses from floating around in cyberspace.
On the other hand, if you want to see the BCC addresses of an e-mail you personally sent out (maybe you forgot who all you sent an e-mail to or something), it depends on the e-mail program you use. Some e-mail clients keep a copy of the BCC addresses in your Sent Items folder, but others don't reveal them at all.
The BCC option is a very private issue and most agree that's exactly how it should stay. And that's that!

Q: Do you have any tips on how to get the computer ready for an extended amount of use?
A: That's a wonderful question and it's very smart thinking on your part. Parents (and grandparents) who have children (and grandchildren) that will be using the computer more once they go back to school should always be cautious of what shape your computer is in and what the kids will be doing on it as well. Your computer may not have gotten much use over the summer, but with all the homework assignments that kids get these days, it's guaranteed the computer will be set on high usage. Below are seven tips you can follow to get your computer ready for that extra attention.
1. The first step is covering the basics:
Make sure you have a firewall installed on your computer. Make sure your security software (antivirus, antispyware, etc.) is up-to-date. Make sure your computer is up-to-date as well by updating your operating system regularly. Internet safety software is very helpful, here is a free trial of NetNanny http://www.netnanny.com/2. Scrutinize all files sent through e-mail and through instant messengers. Microsoft reminds us that being fooled into opening e-mail attachments is still the most prevalent way in which viruses spread.
3. Viruses aren't the only annoyances out there. Two quick rules of thumb for handling spam are using e-mail filters and deleting unwanted e-mails without opening them.
4. Then there is spyware. To my mind, a bad case of spyware can be the most annoying thing in the world. Keeping your antispyware software up-to-date and scanning regularly is the first step in the right direction.
5. Going wireless? Better secure that connection. Whether it's securing your network at home or your laptop at the local hotspot, you've got to know how to "lock things down." Being lax with your wireless security can really open the doors for unwanted trouble.
6. Password protecting your system is the best way to physically stop anyone from accessing your PC. If you carry around data on CDs or any type of flash media (thumb and flash drives), password protect them as well. Someone could find them and easily access the onboard data otherwise.
7. Last, but certainly not least, back up your data! Nothing can keep you down if you have a good backup plan and you execute it consistently. This can allow your kids to still turn in that paper or without having to tell their teacher that the dog ate their homework.
There you go! Seven tips for protecting and securing your system and sensitive information from cyber attackers. This might all seem very general or even fundamental, but that's the point. This is a pre-flight checklist of your PC maintenance and security routine, if you will. So, now the only question that remains is, "Is your system secure and ready for takeoff"?!

Q:Are there any Web sites out there today that are aimed directly toward senior citizens? I sometimes get bored with some of the other sites and I would like to try something new.
A: This is a very interesting question and it's not something we've really touched on before, but I think it will be good material to cover. I know a lot of WorldStart's readers spend a lot of time on their computers and it's always good to have new and exciting Web sites to look at throughout the day. Whether it's while you work or in your leisure time, there are several Web sites designed just for senior citizens.
Okay, before I list some sites for you, I'll let you know that these are all good for networking with other seniors, making new friends, learning more about computers, obtaining information about retirement, etc. If that sounds interesting to you, go along with me as I explain some of them!
1.) Senior Citizens Resources http://www.firstgov.gov/Topics/Seniors.shtml - This Web site is run by FirstGov and it provides several tips for senior citizens. It gives information on consumer protection, places senior citizens can volunteer, seniors and adult education, advice on estate planning and federal and state agencies for seniors. This site also has links to the government sites that may be beneficial to senior citizens, such as the Administration on Aging, the Social Security Administration and the Veteran's Health Administration. Check it all out here.
2.) SeniorNet -http://www.seniornet.org/php/default.php This Web site's mission is to provide access to computer technology for older adults. As a result, senior citizens will be able to gain more knowledge and wisdom and eventually share it with others. This site is basically set up as a discussion board. Everyone is welcome to participate in the SeniorNet RoundTable discussion groups. You just have to sign up for the boards and then you will be able to learn and teach others about computers and using the Internet. If you feel like you could share your wisdom with others or if you want to learn more, this site is perfect for you. Check out SeniorNet here.
3.) Web Pointers for Seniors -http://web.pdx.edu/~psu01435/startup.html If you're looking for even more sites to try out, this is the place you'll want to go. It is managed by a retired couple from Oregon and they have set up a whole Web site full of links they feel would be of special interest to senior citizens. There are links to such topics as senior issues, grandkids, senior guides, caregiving, health, nutrition, legal issues, financial planning, travel and others. Do keep in mind that this site hasn't been updated in awhile and some of the links no longer work, but it is worth taking a look at. There are still working links to a lot of helpful information that is all useful for seniors. Check it out here.
4.) SeniorLink -http://www.seniorlinkonline.com/ This site is mainly helpful for senior citizens in maintaining independence in their own homes. The developers of this site want seniors to be able to do this safely and with dignity. This site even offers some help for children who have aging parents. It gives advice on making the difficult choices that come with the elderly care of their parents. This site does have some parts that require a paid subscription, but you can access free information in the Caregiver FAQ and Top Elder Risks sections. Take a look at it here.
5.) Write a Senior Citizen -http://www.writeseniors.com/ Here is one more site I thought some of you might be interested in. This is more on the fun side of things! This Web site was actually created by two teenagers who wanted to bring senior citizens together. You can use it to write other seniors by e-mail or even by snail mail as a pen pal. If you're wanting to get connected with other seniors, this is the best place for it. Check it out here.

Restore Damaged Photos
Do you keep old photographs no matter what shape they're in? Most of us have pictures of our ancestor’s stored away somewhere. They are preserved carefully away from the dust and the kids. These are the same black and white pictures that have gone through years of wear and tear and they show clear signs of it as well. If only you had a penny for every time you wished those pictures could be restored. Well, wish no more.
The good thing is that with the kind of technology we have available to us today, this is not an impossible task. For this tutorial, we will once again fall back on our friendly tool: Photoshop. First of all, of course, you need to scan the picture you want to restore onto your computer. I'll wait while you do that.
Okay, here is my example. As you can see, the picture is pretty damaged. Especially the edges toward the right. We’ll start the resurrection by using the healing brush tool. This tool helps you copy the selected image of an area of the picture to another part of it.
Now that you have selected the healing brush tool (as shown above), you can select the area of the picture that you want to replicate by using Alt + a left click on the healing brush to that area. The part on which you ALT + left click gets copied to the clipboard.
To paste it over the affected area that you want to “heal,” just stroke the brush over it. Make sure you use it tastefully so that it doesn’t look overdone or too different from the surrounding areas.
Another way to “heal” is to make the brush size pretty large and click just once on the affected area instead of brushing it. It can be pretty effective if surrounding patterns aren’t too different from the one that you are going to paste. However, when it comes to detailed restoration (like in the screenshot below), it helps to just brush over the torn area. It’s also a good idea to zoom in to be able to restore the damaged area more precisely.
After you follow the above mentioned technique, your picture should look something like this:
Another way to do the exact same thing is to use the clone stamp tool. It functions in the same manner (Alt+click) and it gets the job done in a similar way.
Another trick to restoring old pictures is efficient use of the blur tool. The blur helps you soften up the areas that are giving you trouble. When something is not blending quite the right way, just use the blur tool and see the magic.
Now, you need to follow the above techniques individually or in combination with each other. If you do, you will be able to restore almost any damaged image from yesteryears. This is what I ended up with:
After the image is restored, the possibilities are endless. You can correct the color balance, brightness, contrast, etc. Now, can you imagine the smiles on the faces of your family members when you show them your handiwork? I bet they'll be big and bright! : )

Q: I use Outlook Express and when I receive e-mails with pictures included, all I can see is a big red X. How can I fix it?
A: If all you see is a red X where your pictures should be, you're probably pretty annoyed, huh? Well, help is here! If you use Outlook Express, the reason your pictures are being blocked is because of a security feature that OE offers. They block your pictures because they don't want unscrupulous senders tracking whether or not you've opened your e-mail. Unfortunately, the security often blocks what you want to see, like your pictures!
To see your pictures, simply click on Tools, then Options and then choose the Security tab.
Proceed to uncheck the "Block images and other external content in the HTML e-mail" box. Click OK.
While viewing your e-mail may take slightly while longer with this option, you'll be able to see all those beautiful pictures that your family and friends send you. Just make sure that you keep an eye out for unusual e-mail messages or unknown sources.
Yahoo! e-mail users can use this tip to view pictures. Now, go look at those pictures!

An estimated 900,000 computers were affected by the blackworm virus, world wide. Although not a very large number, the payload damage cost estimates have not been totaled yet, as this virus erased or corupted files on the affected computer, requiring a reload of the operating system, thus a loss of data. Be sure to keep your files backed up, as this is a date triggered virus, and is expected to to activate the 3rd of each month. Most anti virus vendors should have a removal soon. Be sure to run your updates often.
While email viruses and worms are a ubiquitous part of the online environment, Nyxem (BlackWorm) was relatively rare in that newly infected hosts connect once to a single website, providing a single source of information about the infected population.
Of more critical interest to those infected, the virus also contained a malicious payload designed to overwrite files with certain extensions on the 3rd of every month (beginning February 3, 2006). Affected file types include: .doc, .xls, .mdb, .mde, .ppt, .pps, .zip, .rar, .pdf, .psd, and .dmp.
We estimate that between 469,507 and 946,835 computers in more than 200 countries were infected by the Nyxem virus between January 15 23:40:54 UTC 2006 and Wednesday February 1 05:00:12 UTC. At least 45,401 of the infected computers were also compromised by other forms of spyware or bot software.

About BlackWorm

Over the last week, 'Blackworm' infected about 300,000 systems based on analysis of logs from the counter web site used by the worm to track itself. This worm is different and more serious than other worms for a number of reasons. In particular, it will overwrite a user's files on February 3rd.

At this point, the worm will be detected by up to date anti virus signatures. In order to protect yourself from data loss on February 3rd, you should use current (Jan 23rd or later) anti virus signatures. Note, however, that the malware attempts to disable/remove any anti-virus software on the system (and does this every hour while the system is up), so if the machine was infected before signatures were deployed, obviously, that anti-virus software can't be expected to clean up the infection for you.

The following file types will be overwritten by the virus: DOC, XLS, MDE, MDB, PPT, PPS, RAR, PDF, PSD, DMP, ZIP. The files are overwritten with an error message( 'DATA Error [47 0F 94 93 F4 K5]').

We will try to post more detailed cleanup instructions later. However, it is likely that you will have to rebuild the system from scratch. Obtaining good backups is critical as a first step.

The first thing you should do is to update your anti virus signatures.

I got an attachment but I can't seem to open it. How do I know which program to use? What if I don't have the program needed?

A:
Before you open any attachment, make sure you know who sent it. Even if you know the sender, if you aren't expecting a file, you might want to send a quick note to your friend and make sure they really sent it, especially .pps files that can contain viruses. Also, do not open any attachments with .exe, .scr, or .pif file extensions.

There's nothing worse than getting a file from a friend and not having the right program to open it. Here are some common file extensions and the programs needed to open them:

.doc - Microsoft Word
.pps - MS PowerPoint
.xls - MS Excel worksheet
.wpd - Corel WordPerfect
.pdf - Adobe Acrobat
.jpg - JPEG graphic file
.zip - Zip (compressed) file
.sit - Stuffit (compressed) file
.scr - Windows Screen Saver (DO NOT OPEN)
.pif - Program Information File (DO NOT OPEN)
